Percentage Calculator — Percentage Change, Increase, Decrease & Proportions

Calculate percentage of a number, what percent a part is of a whole, and percentage increases or decreases between two numbers.

Loading calculation controls...

How to Use the Percentage Calculator

  • 1Find Percentage Value (What is P% of X?): Enter the percentage rate P and total value X to determine the resulting fractional portion.
  • 2Find Percentage Ratio (X is what % of Y?): Enter the part value X and whole value Y to find the exact percentage representation.
  • 3Find Percentage Change (Change from X to Y): Enter initial value X and new value Y to calculate the absolute difference and directional percentage increase or decrease.

Calculation Formula & Mathematical Definition

Value = (P ÷ 100) × Total | Ratio % = (Part ÷ Total) × 100 | Change % = ((New − Old) ÷ Old) × 100

1. Percentage of a Value: Value = (P ÷ 100) × Total 2. Percentage Ratio: P (%) = (Part ÷ Whole) × 100 3. Percentage Change (Increase / Decrease): Δ% = ((New Value − Old Value) ÷ |Old Value|) × 100 • If positive: Indicates a percentage increase. • If negative: Indicates a percentage decrease.

Variable Definitions

  • P %=Percentage Rate: Rate expressed in parts per hundred
  • Total=Base / Whole Value: The baseline whole amount
  • Part=Partial Value: The specific subset or portion of the whole
  • Old Value=Baseline Amount: Starting value before change
  • New Value=Updated Amount: Ending value after change

Step-by-Step Worked Example

Worked Example 1: 15% of 200

In "Find Percentage Value", enter 15 as Percentage and 200 as Total Value:

Input Parameters:
Percentage: 15%Total Value: 200
Calculation Steps:
  1. Convert percentage to decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15.
  2. Multiply by total value: 0.15 × 200 = 30.
Final Result:15% of 200 is 30.

Worked Example 2: 30 is What Percent of 200

In "Find Percentage Ratio", enter 30 as Part Value and 200 as Whole Value:

Input Parameters:
Part Value: 30Whole Value: 200
Calculation Steps:
  1. Divide partial value by whole: 30 ÷ 200 = 0.15.
  2. Multiply by 100 to convert to percentage: 0.15 × 100 = 15.0%.
Final Result:30 is 15% of 200.

Worked Example 3: Percentage Increase from 100 to 150

In "Find Percentage Change", enter 100 as Old Value and 150 as New Value:

Input Parameters:
Old Value: 100New Value: 150
Calculation Steps:
  1. Calculate absolute change: 150 − 100 = 50.
  2. Divide by original value: 50 ÷ 100 = 0.50.
  3. Convert to percentage: 0.50 × 100 = +50.0% increase.
Final Result:An increase from 100 to 150 represents a +50% growth.

Worked Example 4: Percentage Decrease from 150 to 100

In "Find Percentage Change", enter 150 as Old Value and 100 as New Value:

Input Parameters:
Old Value: 150New Value: 100
Calculation Steps:
  1. Calculate absolute change: 100 − 150 = −50.
  2. Divide by original value: −50 ÷ 150 = −0.3333 (repeating decimal).
  3. Convert to percentage: −0.3333 × 100 = −33.33% decrease.
Final Result:A decrease from 150 to 100 represents a −33.33% reduction.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate the percentage of a number?

Convert the percentage into a decimal by dividing it by 100, then multiply by the target number. For example, to find 15% of 200, compute (15 / 100) × 200 = 0.15 × 200 = 30.

How do you calculate percentage increase between two numbers?

Subtract the original value from the new value, divide that difference by the original value, and multiply the result by 100: ((New − Old) / Old) × 100. If the result is positive, it reflects an increase; if negative, a decrease.

What is the difference between percentage change and percentage points?

Percentage points measure the simple arithmetic difference between two percentage values, whereas percentage change measures relative proportional growth. For example, if an interest rate moves from 4% to 5%, it has increased by 1 percentage point, but represents a 25% relative increase in the borrowing rate.

How do you find what percent one number is of another?

Divide the specific portion (part) by the whole total, then multiply by 100: (Part / Whole) × 100. For instance, to find what percent 45 is of 60: (45 / 60) × 100 = 0.75 × 100 = 75%.

Can a percentage increase exceed 100%?

Yes. If a quantity doubles, it has experienced a 100% increase. If it triples, it represents a 200% increase. Percentage increases have no upper theoretical limit.

Why isn't a 50% increase followed by a 50% decrease back to the start?

100 + 50% = 150, but 150 − 50% = 75. The second percentage applies to a larger base number. To return from 150 back to 100, you need a 33.33% decrease ((150 − 100) ÷ 150 × 100 = 33.33%).
