SGPA Calculator — Semester GPA from Credits and Grade Points

Six subjects worth 17 credits in total, earning 144 credit points, give an SGPA of 144 ÷ 17 = 8.47. Enter each subject's credits and the grade point you received to get your SGPA, total credits and total credit points.

Understanding the Concept

SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) is a credit-weighted average of the grade points you earned in one semester. Most Indian universities following the UGC Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) use a 10-point scale, where O (Outstanding) is 10, A+ is 9, A is 8, B+ is 7, B is 6, C is 5, P (Pass) is 4 and F (Fail) is 0. Each subject carries a number of credits, usually 1 to 4, that reflects its teaching hours. A 4-credit subject counts four times as much as a 1-credit lab. For each subject, credits × grade point gives the credit points. Add the credit points for all subjects and divide by the total credits to get the SGPA. CGPA is the same calculation across all semesters so far, weighted by each semester's credits. Use the CGPA calculator once you have SGPAs for several semesters. Grade tables, and the formula to convert SGPA to a percentage, vary between universities, so check your own university's regulations.

How to Use the SGPA Calculator

  • 1
Enter each subject's creditsFind the credits for every theory and lab subject on your marksheet or syllabus.
  • 2
Enter the grade point you scoredUse the grade point (0–10), not the letter grade or marks. For example, A = 8 on the common scale.
  • 3
Add or remove subjectsUse "+ Add subject" for extra subjects and "Remove" for ones you don't need.
  • 4
Read your SGPAThe SGPA is shown to 2 decimal places, with your total credits and credit points.

Calculation Formula & Mathematical Definition

SGPA = Σ(Cᵢ × GPᵢ) ÷ Σ Cᵢ

Multiply each subject's credits by its grade point, add the results, then divide by the total credits. A failed subject (grade point 0) still counts its credits, which lowers the SGPA.

Variable Definitions

  • Cᵢ=Credits: Credits for subject i
  • GPᵢ=Grade point: Grade point scored in subject i, on a 0–10 scale

Step-by-Step Worked Example

Six subjects, 17 credits

Input Parameters:
Subjects (credits × grade point): 4×9, 4×8, 3×10, 3×7, 2×8, 1×9
Calculation Steps:
  1. Credit points: 36 + 32 + 30 + 21 + 16 + 9 = 144.
  2. Total credits: 4 + 4 + 3 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 17.
  3. SGPA = 144 ÷ 17 = 8.47.
Final Result:SGPA 8.47.

One failed subject

Input Parameters:
Subjects (credits × grade point): 4×9, 4×0
Calculation Steps:
  1. Credit points: 36 + 0 = 36.
  2. Total credits: 8.
  3. SGPA = 36 ÷ 8 = 4.5.
Final Result:SGPA 4.5. The failed subject's credits still count, so the SGPA halves.

Practical Scenarios & Nuances

Checking your result: confirm the SGPA printed on your marksheet.

Planning: see what grades you need in the remaining subjects to reach a target SGPA.

Placements and applications: many companies set an SGPA or CGPA cut-off such as 7.0.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Taking a simple average of grade points, which ignores credits and gives the wrong result.

Entering marks or percentages instead of grade points.

Leaving out failed subjects, which overstates the SGPA.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is SGPA calculated?

Multiply each subject's credits by its grade point, add the results and divide by the total credits. 144 credit points over 17 credits gives an SGPA of 8.47.

What is the difference between SGPA and CGPA?

SGPA covers one semester. CGPA covers all semesters so far, weighted by each semester's credits.

Does a failed subject affect SGPA?

Yes. A fail carries 0 grade points but its credits still count, so it lowers the SGPA. Two 4-credit subjects with grades 9 and 0 give an SGPA of 4.5.

How do I convert SGPA to a percentage?

It depends on your university. For example, VTU uses (SGPA − 0.75) × 10, while many others use SGPA × 10 or SGPA × 9.5. Check your university's regulations.

What is a good SGPA?

Above 8 is generally considered very good and above 9 excellent. Many campus placements ask for at least 6 or 7.
