Calculate monthly car loan EMI payments, compare 3 to 7 year tenures, and evaluate total interest charges.
Standard Reducing-Balance Car Loan Formula: EMI = [P × r × (1 + r)^n] ÷ [(1 + r)^n − 1] Where: • P = Vehicle loan principal amount • r = Monthly interest rate (Annual Nominal Rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100) • n = Total loan tenure in months (Years × 12) Vehicle Financing Considerations: Unlike home loans with longer horizons, auto loans experience rapid asset depreciation. Shorter tenures (3 to 5 years) preserve vehicle equity and prevent underwater loan scenarios.
Consider an auto loan of 8,00,000 at 9.5% annual interest over a 7-year tenure (84 monthly installments):
EMI = P × r × (1 + r)^n ÷ [(1 + r)^n − 1] with r as the annual rate ÷ 12. For 8,00,000 at 9.5% over 7 years, that is 13,075.19.
It costs much less interest but needs a higher EMI. In the example, 3 years costs 1,22,548.95 in interest versus 2,98,315.57 for 7 years. Pick the shortest tenure you can comfortably afford.
It reduces the loan amount, so the EMI and total interest both fall. Enter your car price minus your down payment as the loan amount.
Ask your lender. A flat rate is charged on the full original amount and is far more expensive than the same percentage on a reducing balance. See the flat vs reducing interest calculator.
No. It covers principal and interest only. Check your lender's charges and any early repayment fee before paying off the loan early, and see the auto loan calculator to model extra payments.
